From Wikipedia: "Silly Putty's unusual flow characteristics are due to the ingredient polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), a viscoelastic liquid. Viscoelasticity is a type of non-Newtonian flow, characterizing material that acts as a viscous liquid over a long time period but as an elastic solid over a short time period. Because its apparent viscosity increases directly with respect to the amount of force applied, Silly Putty can be characterized as a dilatant fluid."

Safeway Tortilla Chip Label.
Above picture shows Safeway brand tortilla chip bag which came in a shopping bag proudly stating Safeway Foods "Ingredient For Life." These tortilla chips were given to me compliments of the Safeway Store in Elizabeth, CO while checking out (July 28, 2015) as a 'taste test' item to sample. I thought this was a really nice gesture on behalf of the store to give me some free food to eat to try out one of their products. Upon arriving home I looked at the food label on the bag of chips and saw an ingredient that I didn't recognize with a really long name. I have a general rule to not eat anything that has a really long and unusual name as an ingredient. The ingredient which is shown on the label close up pictures on this page list the ingredient polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS). I thought, okay this is something I don't often see as a food ingredient so I looked it up on the world wide web using my trusty computer. I found out that PDMS is an ingredient in Silly Putty and is probably used by Safeway's manufacturing process of the chips to reduce cooking grease splatter while the chips are frying! This is to protect the employees no doubt. I don't think I want to ingest a silicone based chemical into my body via Safeway's chips even though the FDA and Dow Chemical say it is okay for human consumption. Both McDonalds (Chicken McNuggets)and Subway (Sub Sandwhich breads) have eliminated some harmful chemicals from their products under pressure from the public recently.

PDMS has various uses including: "Another toy PDMS is used in is Kinetic Sand. The rubbery, vinegary-smelling silicone caulks, adhesives, and aquarium sealants are also well-known. PDMS is also used as a component in silicone grease and other silicone based lubricants, as well as in defoaming agents, mold release agents, damping fluids, heat transfer fluids, polishes, cosmetics, hair conditioners and other applications. PDMS has also been used as a filler fluid in breast implants."
So I have decided that I don't want to knowingly eat anything with PDMS in it such as the tortilla chips from Safeway even if they are free! I don't know why anyone would want to eat anything with PDMS as an ingredient? Another ingredient used in Safeway's tortilla chips is TBHQ which is a known carcinogen.
